QookSmartweb 쿡스마트웹 : the Korean trading name for KT Corp installing Phrom's deep packet inspections systems within the networks.
Korean telecomms companies are currently talking to Phorm Inc. about testing their 'QookSmartweb' (Webwise) adware system within the Korean networks.
About 100,000 customers of KT Corp will be the first to trial the system.
New customers will be asked to opt-in for various Qook (쿡 / 콕 ?) services, one of which will be for more relevant adverts (based on your surfing). This is achieved by installing protocol breaking deep packet inspection systems (PDF) within the network.
All communication data from and to customers is intercepted, mirrored (an actual copy is made), analysed and the data then converted into advertising channels. The ISP is then paid a small revenue for the intelligence gleaned from your data.

SK Telecom and LG Powercom are also expect to trial Smartweb in the near future.
How is this possible after the recent case of Hanaro Telecom leaking customer data?
Is the Internet service data mining your communications for an advertising network less of a breach of your privacy?
If you are UK resident, please sign the petition to the Prime Minister to protect UK comminications from the same communication interception for advertising profits.
